When Does a Pool Need a Fence in Michigan?
If your pool is deeper than 24 inches, state and local codes require a safety barrier—typically a fence. This includes in-ground and above-ground pools.

In-Ground Pools
- Always require a fence, regardless of size
Above-Ground Pools
- May not need a fence if the walls are >48” and ladder is removable or gated
Inflatable or Temporary Pools
- Still require fencing if over 24” deep and left up for more than a few days
