When Does a Pool Need a Fence in Michigan?

If your pool is deeper than 24 inches, state and local codes require a safety barrier—typically a fence. This includes in-ground and above-ground pools.

Pool Fence Requirements by Pool Type

In-Ground Pools

  • Always require a fence, regardless of size

Above-Ground Pools

  • May not need a fence if the walls are >48” and ladder is removable or gated

Inflatable or Temporary Pools

  • Still require fencing if over 24” deep and left up for more than a few days

Always Check with Your Township

Rules can vary slightly between Kent County, Grand Rapids, Rockford, Cedar Springs, and other Michigan municipalities.
